School of Robotics

School of Robotics is a non profit organization founded in 2000 by a group of robotic and
humanities scholars. Has as its purpose the promotion of culture through activities of education,
training, education and dissemination of the arts and sciences involved in the development of this
new science.
Since 2000, the School of Robotics has become a reference point for many national and
international research and application in the field of robotics & Company, in the robotics in teaching
and communication in the field of robotics. Partner in several European projects, School of
Robotics in 2004 organized the First International Symposium on Roboethics, which gave impetus
to this field of study.
School of Robotics is a member of Euron / EUROP.
Why Robotics
Robotics is changing the way we do science and our view of ourselves.
Robotics chases actually one of the oldest dreams of man. Since ancient times, when it still did not
have power sources capable of moving machines and possessed limited technical capabilities, the
man imagined the most complex machine exists: an imitation of the human being himself. We find
this fantastic in Greek mythology: the ancient texts that narrate animated statues, or mechanical
automata, were guarding the labyrinth built by Daedalus, the first engineer of the story.
Man has always built tools to increase their power and decrease fatigue. This activity has become
one of the keys to economic progress, thanks to the machines of the industrial revolution of the
nineteenth century and the automatic machines of the twentieth century. Today, advances in
information technology, communications and new materials allow to equip machines of much
intelligence to make them autonomous.
In the twenty-first century, humanity will live with the first alien intelligence of its history, the
robot, with all the ethical and social problems that will ensue.
Educational Robotics
Study and apply robotics is not only important to learn how to build or use robots, but also to learn
a method of reasoning and experimentation in the world. in fact:
• Robotics collects all the necessary skills to the construction of machines (mechanical,
electrical, electronics), computers, software, communication systems, networks.
• the specificity of this new science promotes creative attitudes in students, as well as their
communication skills, cooperation and teamwork.
• the study and application of robotics, allows students an attitude of interest and openness
even to the traditional core subjects (p. eg. mathematics, physics, technical drawing, etc.)
• the use of robotic kits to school, from early childhood, promotes interest in science among
girls which are, in our schools, traditionally targeted for socio / cultural towards humanities.
Obviously it is proposed to introduce a new subject but to create application modules in
interdisciplinary programs of existing materials, actively exploiting communications technologies.
This will make it possible to create experimental projects at both the Institute and through the
network of schools across the country.
School of Robotics is not a traditional school, housed in a building with classrooms, desks and
blackboards, as to promote the knowledge of robotics in education and training facilities already
exist. In the age of cyberspace School Robotics aims to modernize not only the content but also the
educational methods of the traditional school. Achieved the goal of equipping schools with PCs
connected to the Internet, it is therefore necessary:
• create new types of training and professional development.
• design and implement integrative pathways between different training systems.
• promote partnerships between schools, institutions, government agencies and industry.
• create innovative educational content to be entered in the circuits of e-learning.
This will allow the participation of schools in real time to the activities of scientific and
technological research in order to:
• allow the continued updating of teachers
• facilitate entry into employment of graduates
• select and prepare the best graduates to higher education
• enable lifelong learning in the workplace
This is why the School of Robotics aims to reach schools through the Internet and communication
technologies in order to promote collaboration between schools to test new networking activities, as
part of a Distributed Virtual Laboratory. Such a workshop will be connected in real time to research
laboratories of universities and industries, and allow you to carry out activities aimed primarily at
young people in the various sections of the pre-university education, their teachers and technicians
of the companies operating in the sector.
Classes for students
School of Robotics held since 2004 robotics courses at school for students of various orders and
levels. The validity of educational robotics as a learning environment is now recognized in many
national and international locations in Europe and the robots are now currently used in many school
situations from primary school to university. Even the Ministry of Education funding the project
Robot @ School (2004-2005) has shown sensitivity to this issue. The concrete experiences
implemented in Italy by teachers of the network Robots @ School allow to trace a path very
articulate activity, typically interdisciplinary, which, inspired by the robotics lab, helping to build
mathematical-scientific knowledge which blend significantly with those of other areas (language,
history, expressive ...). From the cognitive point of view you can think of the robot as an 'object' in
which pupils perform experiments concrete (actions, movements but also reasoning related to these
actions and movements) that are transformed into 'thought experiments' (advances, simulations ,
forecasts) ensuring that they gradually acquire new tools of thought: this undoubtedly favors the
development of high-level cognitive skills. Educational robotics can be an effective tool to bring
together both teachers and pupils with the 'world' because in the life of every day we have to deal
increasingly with the 'robot' that are used in many areas of the company not only in industry but
also in entertainment. But you can not forget another aspect which proved important in the course
of our experiences: the robot is a concrete object on which somehow pupils transferring their way of
thinking and acting, and in doing so recognize the almost its 'personality', his victories are their
victories, to be able to program it to him to do a certain action and see what he says gives
gratification that hardly other school activities can give. This peculiarity of the robot helps to create
a bond even emotional-affective between pupils and the object they have built, especially if you
plan to have their actions reflected in their reality and their interests (robots playing soccer, that
dance, ...).
